When evaluating special legal courses for transfer, the program director discusses the proposed scholarship with the Vice-Dean. If the loan seems appropriate, the program director and the student will discuss the appropriate challenge and/or exam and grade required to grant the loan. (Previously, loans were granted by portfolio presentation). This program is endorsed by the American Bar Association. The paralegal studies program prepares students for challenging and diverse careers in private law practices and in areas related to business, industry, and government law. Law students receive the legal training necessary to take advantage of new career opportunities in all sectors of the economy. Students are exposed to the principles of legal ethics and are cautioned against restrictions against unauthorized exercise of law by laymen. Paralegals cannot provide legal services directly to the public, except as permitted by law. The number of credits allowed for the transfer is less than 50% according to Montana State Board of Regents guidelines.
The CAS degree requires completion of 33 legal specialty credits for the degree. Therefore, to complete the paralegal program at Missoula College-University of Montana, a student can transfer less than 18 special legal credits and no more than 30 program transfer points in total. The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) with a focus on legal studies is designed to enhance the interaction between business leader and legal advisor and prepare graduates to excel in a variety of business activities. A flexible and inherently interdisciplinary degree program, the legal studies major can facilitate careers in areas such as risk management, compliance, human resources, marketing, finance and accounting, general business or nonprofit management, healthcare, government, and small business/entrepreneurship. For some, it can also provide a suitable foundation for the professional study of law. This program includes law school preparation in its program of study, including LSAT preparation and navigating the law school application process. The fourth year of the bachelor`s thesis is the first year of UM Law School (upon admission). Students on this track who are not admitted to UM Law School may transfer majors to Paralegal to complete their bachelor`s degree.
Lambda Epsilon Chi recognizes scholarships and leadership skills of law students. It is available for students. Membership is by invitation only. To be eligible, you must demonstrate superior academic performance, evidenced by an overall GPA of at least 3.25 and a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 in your law courses at UMGC. The Certificate of Legal Studies is a 1-year distance learning program that can be combined with an Associate of Arts (AA) or Associate of Science (AS) degree. The program is tailored to the needs of individuals interested in working as paralegals in law firms, government agencies, public administration, the judiciary and health insurance.
